Project: New Steel portal frame materials storage unit with external parking.
Project Description: GSJP were tasked with providing the bulk excavation & fill prior to and including the sub-structure RC concrete work, internal and external storm & foul drainage and the external hard paving works to provide parking and delivery space.
Construction: The existing site had undergone extensive demolition and probing work prior to our arrival. We were then tasked to carry out the bulk excavation and removal of the spoil followed by the importation of c.6000 tonnes of certified fill to provide a piling platform.
The site had elements of non-hazardous waste classification and extensive testing & monitoring of the spoils had to be managed to ensure compliance for the removal. This included an area of Japanese Knotweed.
Once this phase was complete the piling contractor installed c.600 CFA piles with our team in attendance providing spoil removal and assistance throughout this phase.
Our own foundation works commenced whilst the piling team were still on site which included the excavation of the ground beams & pile caps, breaking down of the piles, shuttering & reinforcement placement and the concrete pours complete with the holding down bolt assemblies.
Once complete the large internal attenuation tank was installed taking great care during the excavation of the tank amongst the recently formed piles. We then installed all the internal drainage runs and civilised the piling mat to allow the steel frame erection to commence. The frame fitted perfectly to our cast-in bolt templates, and we have completed the grouting and column encasements at this stage.
This leaves the internal floor slab preparation and the external hard paving works to complete on our return visit.
Planning & Execution: The building footprint takes up virtually the whole of the site which meant some careful & strategic planning of the works sequence and deliveries. With over 700 lorry movements during phase 1 of our work, careful traffic management was crucial to the progress with such a tight schedule. Our site team were diligent in their approach to the site requirements and the collaborative way in which we seamlessly worked with the other specialist contractors.
Quality: The exact positioning of the building was closely monitored by our own engineer throughout the process. The installation of reinforcement, HD bolts & concrete was inspected and signed off throughout the build process by the Structural Engineer & the client with glowing praise for the site team.
Relationships: This was our first project for Ascia Construction, and we have already completed our second project for them with others being negotiated. This reinforces the GSJP ethos of safety, quality & production, whilst maintaining an honest & transparent work approach enabling clients to have trust in their supply chain and building collaborative working relationships that benefit all parties.
